JOURNAL / DEVELOPMENT NOTES

When the pieces
tell the story of
a whole day.

A little closer to our workbench: the connections, the people and the next chapter taking shape.

Hi, I’m Tomo.

Today, I’d like to bring you a little closer to our workbench. To the place where ideas are slowly becoming something that could one day help in your own home. Among the notes, conversations with manufacturers and small moments of delight when two things finally fit together after passing each other by the day before.

I like the moment when separate pieces of information start to tell the story of a whole day. Morning sunshine. Energy in the battery. Warmth saved for the evening. A weather forecast, and a family coming home. Each has something to tell us. Together, they begin to answer the question at the heart of our work: what makes the most sense for this particular home, right now?

That is the question TomoAiCore is growing around.

Our journey began with everyday experience. We tried the automation tools available, both paid and free, looking for a way to bring more context to home energy. In our own trials, we encountered moments when the sun was shining, solar generation was being held back, and the home was still buying electricity from the grid. You look out of the window, then back at the energy dashboard, and start to wonder.

So we kept wondering. And then we started building.

Gradually, a shared core took shape as an idea: a meeting place for information about generation, consumption, batteries, prices and the needs of a household. A place where planning can see more of the picture, and individual devices can find their part in a coherent story. It sounds simple. Making it feel simple to use is precisely why there is so much work behind it.

Much of today’s development happens in the connections between those parts. We are working on how they exchange the right information, follow on from one another and keep track of what is happening. How does a plan reach a device? How do we check that it was received? What can the device actually tell us in return? Each well-understood connection gives the project a firmer foundation.

The quiet importance of midnight

At this point, I could show you a screen full of numbers. Instead, let me tell you about something small: midnight.

For us, midnight changes the date on a clock. For a home energy system, it can also mark the end of one plan, the beginning of another, and a change in what an earlier decision means. The battery still holds its energy. The house still holds its warmth. Transitions like these are part of our recent development work: helping a new day begin with a clear understanding of where the home actually stands.

Questions like this meet us throughout the work. What happens at the boundary between two time slots? How does a revised plan take effect? Which information is fresh, and what is a decision based on? From the outside, they look like little details. Inside the project, they are an important part of helping everything work together.

There is one number I would like to share. In one of our recent documented development runs, more than a thousand automated checks passed. Behind that number are many different situations we prepare and revisit. Each new change meets a familiar question: how well do you get along with everything we have already built?

Alongside those checks, we are progressively verifying real behaviour and connections with equipment. That meeting between a plan and the real world brings some of the most useful notes. Development records, answers from manufacturers and experience with individual devices add to one another. Together, they help us understand more precisely how the shared core should work.

People behind the connections

People are a large part of that picture. The project brings together a team, external programmers and coordinators. Someone follows the connections, someone checks device behaviour, and someone takes a question to a manufacturer. My part is introducing the project and looking after its public voice: turning our shared work into words and pictures you can find your way around.

Working with manufacturers has a rhythm of its own. To connect their equipment well, we need to understand how it behaves, how to communicate with it and which integration options they provide. Sometimes a short, precise answer moves forward a piece of work we have been sitting with for quite a while.

These conversations also involve access, documentation and practical ways of working together. Secure digital handling of documents, in line with our internal rules, matters to us. Finding a shared way forward can take patience on both sides. Bringing technology, people and processes together is another part of building a connection that can last.

So, where are we now?

Our next chapter

TomoAiCore is still in alpha. We have made concrete progress in planning, integration and verification, and we are continuing to bring those pieces together. Our attention is on completing the connections and checking them in practice. The results will help us decide when the time is right to open the next chapter.

I would love that chapter to arrive soon. We will refine the outlook as this work progresses. I’m looking forward to showing you the next milestone alongside what it brings to everyday use. Every carefully checked connection moves us towards that day.

The direction remains easy to describe in human terms. We want to help households make better use of the energy they produce and buy, in a way that fits the lives being lived inside them. Hot water when it is needed. A battery prepared thoughtfully for the hours ahead. A clearer understanding of why something is happening.

We want this to be available for a small, sustainable fee. That is why we are also exploring collaboration and European support that could help bring it within reach of more people. For homes with higher consumption and a suitable setup, better energy management can have meaningful financial value. We want to assess that value through real conditions and results.

Behind all these thoughts, I keep picturing an ordinary evening. The house feels comfortable. Energy has found a useful place. And someone has time for something they love. Perhaps a quiet moment at the table with their family.

Those are the moments that give our work its direction.

Next time you visit, I’ll be glad to tell you what else has fallen into place.
